Welcome to Reception

A very warm welcome to all the reception children beginning their learning journey at Heywood Prep School. We hope that you had a wonderful summer break and you are all relaxed, recharged and looking forward to the start of your child’s journey at Heywood Prep. It’s good to see your child settling happily into school life already and it is a pleasure getting to know them.

This term we will spend a lot of time settling children into their new environment and ensure they feel comfortable and safe to learn. We will begin our term with the theme ‘Percy the Park Keeper’ and then ‘Out of the Box’, learning about friends, likes and dislikes, favourite foods, woodland animals, and surprise themes that appear from an old box in an attic.

Every Thursday we will be heading out on the school minibus (in all weathers!) to Woodland Adventurers to explore all things autumnal.

If you would like further information or have any concerns or issues you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to speak to us at school or contact us via our email addresses below.

More about Reception at Heywood

At Heywood Prep we believe that play is at the heart of all learning. In the Early Years Foundation Stage the children follow the EYFS Framework. They are encouraged to experience a wide range of activities to ensure that they develop as well rounded, independent learners.

The EYFS consists of 7 areas of learning. These are broken down into prime and specific areas.

The 3 prime areas are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The 4 specific areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

The children socialise and learn alongside each other, with Mrs Lawrence, Miss Vernon and our TA Miss Lewis working closely together to ensure that each child experiences a wide range of activities and opportunities. Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning so that they can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.  At all times the children’s learning is regularly assessed to ensure that each child can reach their full potential.

The children will also receive weekly lessons by specialist teachers for swimming, music, singing and PE.
